13-year-old Russian taken from father for signing in support of Ukraine

A Russian teenager was taken away from her father, who raised her, for drawing a picture in support of Ukraine, and entrusted to the mother she hadn’t seen in years, in a new episode of a symbolic story about repression in Russia .

Maria Moskaliova, 13 years old and nicknamed Masha, was denounced by the school after she pulled rockets fired at a Ukrainian family. She was taken away from her father, who raised her alone, and placed in a nursing home in March.

The father, Alexei Moskaliov, was sentenced to two years in prison for belittling the Russian military, and arrested last week in Belarus, where he fled, but his entourage and the justice system say they don’t know where he is now .

A court in Efremov, 300 kilometers south of Moscow, which was supposed to consider a request to limit the rights of Alexei Moskaliov’s parents, rejected this verdict, saying it was unable to locate and subpoena him.

Tonight, on the eve of the scheduled start of this trial, the authorities announced that the mother, Olga Sitchikhina, who had not seen Masha for several years, suddenly appeared and took the teenager with her.

“Olga, at her request, removed Masha from the social rehabilitation center where she was staying,” Russian children’s commissar Maria Lvova-Belova wrote on the Telegram messaging app on Wednesday evening.

“Let’s hope all is well with the mother and daughter,” added the Russian official, the subject of another case involving an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court, accusing her of deporting Ukrainian children to Russia.

“They did not live together for a long time and communicated very little. At first, Masha did not want to see her mother,” Lvova-Belova justified, adding that the teenager “changed her mind”, as she revealed to her on the phone.
