‘Zelensky can’t want it all’: Lula suggests kyiv give up Crimea to end war in Ukraine

“The world needs calm (…) A solution must be found,” the Brazilian president begged this Thursday, who at the end of January formulated a proposal for mediation in the conflict in Ukraine.

The president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, suggested this Thursday in Kiev to cede the Crimean peninsula to Russia to end the war in Ukraine, considering that the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, “cannot want everything”.

Russian President Vladimir Putin “cannot seize the territory of Ukraine. Crimea may be discussed. But what else he invaded, he has to think about it,” Lula said during a meeting with journalists in Brasilia.

“Zelensky cannot want everything either,” continued the Brazilian president. “The world needs calm… We have to find a solution,” he added.

Lavrov’s visit to Brazil in April

Ukraine refuses to negotiate with Moscow without first withdrawing Russian troops from all of its territory, including Crimea annexed by Russia in 2014.

Lula formulated at the end of January a proposal, still with vague outlines, for mediation in the conflict in Ukraine by a group of countries. The Brazilian president is due to present this project to his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, in Beijing next week.

The Brazilian head of state said he was “confident” in the chances of success of this project, hoping that the group of countries “will be created” upon his return from China.

Lula’s top adviser on international affairs, Celso Amorim, met in Moscow at the end of March with Vladimir Putin and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who is also expected in Brazil on April 17.
