Chinese court executes man who drove into crowd with car

A man was executed by Chinese justice on Friday after being sentenced to death for deliberately driving a car into a group of people in May 2021, killing five and injuring eight.

The Intermediate People’s Court of the city of Dalian, in northeastern China, had sentenced the man to death on charges of “endangering public safety”.

The convict, Liu Dong, ran over pedestrians crossing Wuhui Street in Dalian at the pedestrian crossing “because he couldn’t handle the failure of an investment,” the court said in 2021.

The court revealed that four people died at the scene, while another eventually succumbed to his injuries and died in hospital. Eight other people were injured.

After the hit-and-run, Liu ran into a van, abandoned the vehicle, and left the scene.
