China and France support restoration of peace and reject attacks on power plants

China and France vowed this Friday to support “all efforts to restore peace” in Ukraine and to secure their opposition to armed attacks on nuclear power plants.

The position was expressed in a joint statement quoted by China’s Xinhua news agency, which was released shortly after French President Emmanuel Macron’s visit to that Asian country.

The two countries also defended the search for “constructive solutions, based on international law, to the challenges and threats to global security and stability”.

For Beijing and Paris, the differences must therefore be resolved “peacefully and through dialogue”.

Speaking on Thursday with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, Macron said he knew he had China’s support to “bring reason to Russia and bring all sides to the negotiating table.”

The French president also noted that “Russia’s aggression has put an end to decades of peace in Europe”, adding that he is confident Beijing will help him broker negotiations for “a lasting peace which respects internationally recognized borders and avoids” the escalation of the conflict.

Jinping, for his part, said he joined France in urging the international community to avoid actions that exacerbate the crisis.

China opposes sanctions against Moscow.

The two countries will also deepen their understanding of security issues and strengthen inter-power dialogue.

Since the Chinese president met his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, to present his peace proposals, Macron is the second European leader to travel to China, after Spaniard Pedro Sánchez.
