Customs authorities at Brussels airport this week seized a batch of Easter bunnies that, instead of the famous Belgian chocolate, were made with MDMA, the psychotropic substance from which ecstasy pills are made.
This synthetic drug is widely marketed over the internet and, consequently, sent by mail, in this case disguised as the best-selling chocolates at this time of year.
According to the AFP news agency, the order for the fake chocolate bunnies was destined for a buyer in Hong Kong. The batch contained more than a kilogram of MDMA, enough to produce 6,000 ecstasy pills.
Belgium was already a gateway to Europe for cocaine from Latin America and now appears to be becoming a distributor of synthetic drugs produced on the European continent and shipped around the world by courier.
“Today, people can order online or on the dark web with just a few clicks and choose what they want delivered to their home,” says Florence Angelici, a spokeswoman for Belgium’s Federal Public Service.
Last year, almost six tons of drugs were seized at the Brussels airport.
