Russian, Ukrainian soldiers engage in “fierce” fighting in Bakhmut

Russian troops will continue their advance this Saturday towards the town of Bakhmut, in the Donbass region, where Ukrainian troops are fighting “fierce fighting” to halt the offensive, the EFE agency reports.

According to the military report of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, “fierce fighting is taking place in the Bakhmut area and Russian troops are trying to control the whole city”.

The same source adds that besides Bakhmut, Russians also give priority to the cities of Lyman, Avdiivka and Marinkaall located in Donetsk province, in the east of the country.

According to the Ukrainian army Russia plans to withdraw civilians from areas under its control in Zaporizhia and Khersonfor the imminent counter-offensive in Kiev.

In his usual speech of the day, the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky commented on the meeting he had with his General Staff and the status of the formation of the new brigades that the country is preparing to launch a counter-offensive in the spring.

“The main focus is on the fighting for Avdiivka and Bakhmut and for the Lugansk region, for each of the regions where the enemy is trying to break the defenses of Ukraine,” said the Ukrainian head of state.
