Three ‘missiles’ fired from Syria at Israel

Three “missiles” were fired into Israel from Syria on Saturday night, the Israeli army said, following similar shots fired from neighboring Lebanon in recent days and at a time when violence is rising in the Middle East.

One of the missiles “fell into a wasteland in the southern Golan Heights” annexed by Israel, the military said in a terse statement, without giving further details.

The military had previously said warning sirens had sounded in that area.

Israel conquered and annexed part of the Golan Heights in 1967, a strategic region that also borders Lebanon.

The Jewish state has recently intensified its attacks in Syria, mainly targeting the positions of pro-Iran groups, its greatest enemy.

Today’s firing follows an unprecedented escalation on the Israeli-Lebanese front since 2006.

On Thursday, about 30 rockets were fired at Israel from Lebanon, injuring one person and causing property damage.

The Israeli military said the unclaimed gunfire was “Palestinian” and likely from the Islamist Hamas movement, which is in power in the Gaza Strip.

The army retaliated with attacks in Gaza and southern Lebanon.

Violence has escalated in recent days after Israeli troops stormed Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa Mosque during Ramadan on Wednesday, sparking widespread outrage.

A car bomb in Tel Aviv killed an Italian and wounded seven people on Friday night, according to Israeli police.

On Friday morning, two Anglo-Israeli sisters were killed in a new attack on the West Bank, Palestinian territory occupied by Israel since 1967.
