Rockets fired from Syria and Palestinians killed by soldiers

Three rockets were fired from Syria into Israeli territory and a young Palestinian was shot dead by the Israeli army, in the latest episodes of the escalation of Israeli-Palestinian violence since Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s new government took office in December.

On Saturday night, three rockets from Syria, the Israeli army said. “One of the missiles entered Israeli territory and landed in an open area in the Golan Heights,” which is occupied by Israel, the Israeli military said.

Also on Saturday night, the Palestinian Health Ministry reported that Israeli soldiers shot dead a Palestinian in the northern West Bank.

Ahed Salim, 20, was hit in the chest and abdomen in Azzun, near Qalqilyah, the ministry said without giving further details.

These developments come after Tel Aviv began calling up police and army reservists to bolster its defenses following attacks that killed three people, including an Italian tourist, and gunfire from rockets from Lebanon.

Despite international calls for restraint, violence has escalated since Israeli police stormed Al-Aqsa mosque on Wednesday after being told Palestinians chanting in support of the Hamas movement had barricaded themselves inside.

Israel bombed both Gaza and southern Lebanon in response to rockets launched by Palestinian militants.

The growing excitement comes as the Islamic fasting month of Ramadan coincides with the Jewish Passover and the Christian Passover.
