Two Wisconsin police officers were killed Saturday in a shootout during a traffic operation, local law enforcement officials said.
The Wisconsin Department of Justice said in a statement Saturday night that it was investigating the shooting that took place in the town of Cameron, in Barron County, located in the state of Wisconsin.
An officer from the Chetek city police department stopped a car at around 3:38 p.m. local time Saturday (9:38 p.m. Saturday in Lisbon), and at some point there was an exchange of fire with the driver of the vehicle. said the state Department of Justice.
Chetek’s agent and another Cameron agent were pronounced dead at the scene.
The suspect in the shooting was taken to a hospital and later died, the justice department said.
The names of the officers and the suspect were not released.
“I am deeply saddened by the tragic loss of two officers today. My thoughts are with their families and the Chetek and Cameron Police Departments at this incredibly difficult time,” Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul said in a message posted on the social networks Twitter.
The Wisconsin Department of Justice Criminal Investigation Division is conducting the investigation and will file a report with the Barron County District Attorney when the investigation is complete, according to the statement.
