Israel announces that it has attacked Syria after rocket fire

Israel has announced that it has struck Syria, following rocket fire on the Golan Heights and after similar attacks from neighboring Lebanon and the Gaza Strip in recent days.

“Artillery is coming to the region of Syria from where rockets were fired into Israeli territory,” the Israeli army said late Saturday, adding that a drone had also been used. [aparelho aéreo não tripulado].

In all, six rockets were fired, they said. At least one was intercepted by Israeli anti-aircraft systems and two landed in unpopulated areas in the Golan region, part of which Israel conquered from Syria in 1967 and later annexed.

It is a strategic region, patrolled by Israeli soldiers and also bordering Lebanon.

These as yet unclaimed attacks are the latest episode in the escalation of violence in the Middle East. Two anti-Israeli attacks killed three people on Friday.

On Thursday, around 30 rockets were fired from Lebanon towards Israel, causing one injury and property damage, in an escalation unprecedented since 2006 on the Israeli-Lebanese front.

The Israeli army said the unclaimed rocket fire was carried out “by Palestinians” and responded with strikes in Gaza and southern Lebanon.

Israel and Lebanon are technically in a state of war, after several conflicts, and the ceasefire line is controlled by the United Nations Interim Force (UNFIN), located in southern Lebanon.

On the Syrian side, Israel has recently intensified its attacks, targeting positions of pro-Iranian groups, the number one enemy.
