The spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, apologized Monday after a video of him kissing a boy and asking him to suck his tongue went viral on social media.
The Dalai Lama’s office issued an apology, explaining that the Nobel peace laureate used to “joke” with anyone he met, “innocently,” even “in front of cameras.”
Still, the spiritual leader apologized to the boy and the family for the pain he may have caused.
The episode took place on February 28, when the spiritual leader addressed a group of students in a temple in Dharamshala, in northern India.
The Dalai Lama kissed a boy on the lips and, when their heads touched, he asked the boy to lick his tongue.
contacted by TSF, Paulo Borges, of the board of directors of the Portuguese Buddhist Union, initially refused to comment on this case, but ended up changing his mind. Paulo Borges feels uncomfortable with the images of this video that is causing controversy.
“This is shocking behaviour, but we don’t know what the Dalai Lama’s intentions were. What it seems to me is that, many times, prominent people within various spiritual traditions behave in behavior that goes beyond the parameters of conventional morality. The Dalai Lama is known for having a spontaneous, unpredictable and shocking behavior from the point of view of conventional morality, he does not justify what happened, but he invites us not to make hasty judgments, because we do not know what his intention was, and the fact that did it before the cameras shows that there was not exactly malice,” he said, in statements to the TSF.
