Cannes Film Festival with record number of female directors in official competition

Films by six directors were selected for official competition at this year’s Cannes Film Festival (France), which is a record, according to the program announced in Paris on Thursday.

The 76th edition of the Cannes Film Festival, scheduled for May, was presented this Tuesday in Paris by Iris Knobloch, the first woman to chair the festival, and Thierry Fremaux, general delegate.

According to the announced list, the official competition for the Palm d’Or will be reinforced with films made by women, with the presence of Alice Rohrwacher, Jessica Hausner, Kaouther Ben Hania, Justine Triet, Catherine Breillat and Ramata-Toulaye Sy.

The France Presse agency recalls that in the entire history of the festival, only two directors have won the Palm d’Ouro: the French Julia Ducournau, in 2021, with Titan, and New Zealand’s Jane Campion, in 1993, with Piano.

The official competition also includes films from names such as Nani Moretti, Aki Kaurismaki, Ken Loach, Marco Bellocchio, Wes Anderson and Hirokazu Kore-eda.

The German director Wim Wenders and the Chinese director Wang Bing have a double participation in the festival this year, in and out of competition.

Wim Wenders returns to Cannes with Perfect daysrecorded in Japan, in official competition, and Anselm (Das Rauschen der Zeit), in special sessions. The same thing happens with Wang Bing, with the documentary Youthin competition, and man in blackout.

This year’s official competition jury is chaired by Swedish director Ruben Ostlund.

Cannes will also host the documentary “Retratos Fantasmas”, by Brazilian director Kléber Mendonça Filho, Cerras los ojosthe first film in almost thirty years by Spanish director Victor Erice, and the previously announced Killers of the flower moonby Martin Scorsese, and Indiana Jones and the Marker of Destinyby James Mangold, which will be shown in Portuguese cinemas in June.

The opening film of the Festival de Cannes will be Joan of Barryfilmed and performed by the French director Maiwenn, with the participation of actor Johnny Depp.

From the schedule revealed today, in the section A certain prestige the movie premieres Buriti’s Flowerby Brazilian director Renée Nader Messora and Portuguese João Salaviza, shot with the Krahô indigenous people of Brazil.

The two authors return to a section where they won the jury prize in 2018 with the film Rain sings in the village of the dead (2018).

The 76th edition of the Cannes Film Festival will take place from 16 to 27 May.

Next week will reveal the films chosen from two of the festival’s parallel programs, which have their own selections and awards: Critics’ Week and Directors’ Fortnight.

Critics’ Week is known to have director of photography Rui Poças on the jury, while the Directors’ Fortnight honors Vale Abraao (1993), by Manoel de Oliveira, placing an image of actress Leonor Silveira, the main character of the film, on the official poster.
