Almost ten million Australians victims of a cyber attack

The personal data of nearly 10 million Australian telecoms subscribers may have been compromised in a massive attack on the country’s second-largest provider, the company announced on Friday.

The executive director of Optus, Kelly Bayer Rosmarin, said that the cyber attack was the work of “experienced people” and that they had obtained access to information from 9.8 thousand users, in a country with a population of about 25 thousand inhabitants, last year.

The data includes customer names, dates of birth, phone numbers, email addresses, and some passport and driver’s license numbers.

According to the Singapore-based company, no passwords or banking information were hacked.

The origin of the attack is unclear and no ransoms have been requested, the official said, adding that she did not know “what is to be done with the data.”

Australian authorities have warned citizens affected by the attack, identified this week, about possible identity theft.
