Avalanche leaves three dead in Italy

Three skiers who were missing in the Alps of the Valle d’Aosta region, in northern Italy, after an avalanche were found lifeless on Friday, according to Alpino rescue and relief teams.

The victims, who had been missing since Thursday, are the 39-year-old mountain guide Lorenzo Holzknecht, the 44-year-old ski champion Sandro Dublanc, and the 37-year-old instructor Elia Meta.

The bodies were flown by helicopter to the Corrado Gex de Saint-Christophe airport in Aosta.

The three missing on Thursday were participating in a mountain race when the avalanche occurred in the early afternoon in the Val di Rhemes, at an altitude of 2,300 meters.

The instructor, Matteo Giglio, who was also swept away by the avalanche, was saved, having been the one who alerted the authorities.

Last Sunday, another avalanche in Armancette, in eastern France, near the border with Italy, caused six deaths.
