Avalanche kills three in Italy

Three skiers who went missing after an avalanche in the Alps in the Valle de Aosta region of northern Italy were found lifeless on Friday, Alpino rescue and relief teams said.

The victims missing since Thursday are 39-year-old mountain guide Lorenzo Holzknecht, 44-year-old ski champion Sandro Dublanc and 37-year-old instructor Elia Meta.

The bodies were transferred by helicopter to Corrado Gex airport in Saint-Christophe in Aosta.

The three disappeared during a mountaineering course on Thursday when the avalanche hit early afternoon in the Val di Rhemes, at an altitude of 2,300 meters.

The instructor, Matteo Giglio, who was also caught in the avalanche, was rescued after alerting authorities.

Last Sunday, another avalanche in Armancette, in eastern France, close to the border with Italy, caused six deaths.
