Magnitude 7 earthquake shakes Indonesia

A magnitude 7 earthquake struck the island of Java, Indonesia, on Friday, the United States Geological Survey advances. There is no information on casualties or damage.

The earthquake was registered at 16:55 local time (09:55 in Portugal). The epicenter was located in the sea, 594 kilometers deep, so the authorities ruled out the possibility of a tsunami.

Located 96 kilometers from Tuban and 157 kilometers from Surabaya, the second most populous city in Indonesia, the shock was also felt in various areas of the island of Java and in Bali, in the south of the archipelago.

“In Surabaya it was felt a bit. The light bulbs trembled,” but the “shake was felt for a short time,” said an Agence France Presse journalist who is in the Indonesian city.

Even so, added the same reporter, “many people panicked” and went out into the streets.
