The former vice president of the European Parliament Eva Kaili was released this Friday from Haren prison, near Brussels, after four months in detention, under house arrest with an electronic bracelet.

Eva Kaili was the only suspect still in custody in the context of the ‘Qatargate’ corruption scandal, after two other main suspects – Belgian MEP Marc Tarabella and former Italian MEP Pier Antonio Panzeri – were released from prison on Thursday. with electronic bracelet.

The Greek MEP, also apart from the group of Socialists and Democrats (S&D), is suspected of having interceded in favor of Qatar and Morocco in exchange for money, having pleaded not guilty.

On Wednesday, the Belgian investigating judge Michel Claise had already decided to place Kaili under house arrest, which was carried out today.

The partner of the former vice president of the European Parliament, Francesco Giorgi, was also arrested two months before going to the electronic bracelet regime.

The Belgian authorities carried out the first searches and arrests on December 9, 2022, having seized 1.5 million euros in banknotes.

Qatar and Morocco deny any involvement in the case.
