Two dead in second mass shooting in a week in Louisville

At least two people were killed and four injured when shots fired into a crowd gathered in a park in Louisville, Kentucky, US on Saturday night (early Sunday in Lisbon), local authorities said.

Police were called to Chickasaw Park around 9 p.m. local time (1 a.m. Sunday in Lisbon) and found that several people had been shot, including two who were pronounced dead at the scene, the Louisville Metropolitan Police Department said.

Another four people were found injured and taken to hospital, one of them in critical condition, Louisville’s assistant police chief Paul Humphrey said at a news conference.

“Hundreds of people were in the park at the time of the shooting when someone started firing into the crowd, hitting at least six people,” Humphrey said.

Police have yet to identify the person responsible or determine the reason for the incident. “I want to speak directly to whoever the shooter is,” Humphrey said. ‘Turn yourself in. The best thing you can do is turn yourself in. We know this will not end well. The best case scenario is to turn yourself in.”

This incident marks the city’s second mass shooting in less than a week. On Monday, a gunman killed five people and wounded several others at Louisville’s Old National Bank — about five miles from Chickasaw Park.

“This has been an unspeakable week of tragedy for our city,” said Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg. “This is not our city. This is not who we are. This is not what we want to be,” he added.
