The Pope prays for peace in Sudan and calls for dialogue

The Pope asked this Sunday for the laying down of arms in Sudan and for dialogue to be possible, after the death of 56 civilians in armed clashes between the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (FAR) and the Sudanese Army.

“I follow the events in Sudan with concern and I am close to the Sudanese people, who have already suffered so much,” Pope Francis told thousands of faithful in St. Peter’s Square, at the Vatican, after the “Regina Coeli” Sunday prayer. , which between Easter Sunday and Pentecost replaces the traditional “Angelus”.

“I invite you to pray that arms be laid down and dialogue prevail so that we can continue together on the path of peace and harmony,” Francis added.

The clashes took place last Saturday, when, after weeks of tension, the FAR accused the Sudanese Army of launching an action against one of its bases in Khartoum, while the Armed Forces assured that it was carried out in response to an attack that the FAR carried out previously, also in the Sudanese capital.
