MEP says she will not return to Greece without her innocence being admitted

Former European Parliament Vice-President Eva Kaili, suspected of involvement in the ‘Qatargate’ corruption case, has taken from a Greek newspaper that she will not return to her country until her innocence is acknowledged.

“If I cannot convince the Belgian justice of my innocence, I will never return to my country of origin”so the socialist MEP took to the Greek newspaper To Vima, which published her statements in the weekend edition.

Eva Kaili is suspected of having brokered decisions of the European Parliament in exchange for cash payments on behalf of foreign powers, including Qatar, for years.

After four months of preventive detention in Belgium, the former Vice-President of the European Parliament has been under house arrest since last Friday, wearing an electronic bracelet.

Since mid-December, when an investigation was opened by the Belgian courts, he was relieved of his position as Vice-President of the European Parliament.

“In December 2022, when I was informed by the media about the allegations against my partner and father of my daughter, my world came crashing down,” she told Eva Kaili newspaper.

His partner, Francesco Giorgi, a parliamentary assistant, was part of the first wave of arrests on December 9 in Brussels, when detectives found 1.5 million euros (ME) in cash, distributed in bags and suitcases.

“Sometimes I thought I would end this ordeal (…), but the thought of my daughter stopped me,” added the 44-year-old MEP.
