The 12 MEPs – from the European People’s Party (EPP), Social Democrats, Conservatives, Liberals and European Greens – called on democratic countries to reflect on possible systems of governance, supervision and support for the development of such technology.
They also appealed to non-democratic countries for restraint and responsibility in their quest to develop such tools.
“Recent developments in the field of artificial intelligence have shown that the speed of technological progress is faster and more unpredictable than anticipated by policy makers around the world,” the deputies warn in the letter.
The subscribers glimpse the “need” for policy makers to devote “significant attention” to the issue, as requested by the North American institute “Future of Life”, in a document signed by more than 2600 experts, academics and businessmen.
The North American institute advocates a six-month break in the training of these artificial intelligence systems to give time to develop secure protocols, otherwise, they warn, “non-human minds” capable of surpassing man and “become more intelligent” running the risk of “losing control” of civilization.
MEPs consider these accusations “alarmist” and disagree with them, being against the proposed moratorium.
