The Taliban announced on Monday that they had decided to close the centers and educational institute, supported by Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), in Write and Close southern Afghanistan, until further notice.
The Taliban Ministry of Education said the decision applied in Helmand and Kandahar provinces and did not explain the reasons for the closures.
A spokesman for the Kandahar education department, Mutawakil Ahmad, said “the decision was made after people filed complaints,” without elaborating.
It remains to quantify the number of centers and institutes that will close and how many students are affected.
At least two NGOs in Helmand confirmed, on condition of anonymity, that they were aware of the order.
One said that he offered classes to some 2,000 students, mostly girls, because they cannot attend schools.
Most of the ongoing projects are from the United Nations agency for children, UNICEF.
