At least 50 dead in repressed protests in Iran, says NGO

The protests began in Iran a week ago after reports of the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old woman arrested last week by police.

‘At least 50 people have been killed’ in protests in Iran since they began a week ago, according to a new evaluation of the NGO Iran Human Rights announcement this Friday. The Oslo-based NGO “once again urges the international community to respond to this situation and prevent the massacre of the Iranian people.”

The death of Mahsa Amini, 22, has generated strong condemnation around the world, as international NGOs have denounced a “brutal” crackdown on the protests. At the UN podium on Wednesday, the President of the United States Joe Biden said he was supportive “brave women of Iran”.

Arrested for “wearing inappropriate clothing”

The young woman, originally from Kurdistan (northwest), was arrested on September 13 in Tehran for “wearing inappropriate clothing” by the vice police, a unit responsible for enforcing the dress code strict in the Islamic Republic of Iran, where women must cover their hair and are not allowed to wear short coats above the knee, tight pants or jeans with holes. She died on September 16 at the hospital.

Activists said he was fatally shot in the head, but Iranian officials denied this and announced an investigation.

The demonstrations broke out immediately after the announcement of his death. Since then, they have hit fifteen cities, including the holy Shiite city of Qom, southwest of Tehran, the birthplace of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

internet off

iranian authorities blocked access to Instagram and WhatsApp Thursday. During the November 2019 protests, caused by the increase in fuel prices, the internet cutoff allowed the authorities to suppress practically behind closed doors.

Amnesty International says that 321 people were killed then, emphasizing that this number only covers proven cases and that the true death toll could be much higher.

The NGO says it is “very concerned about the disruption of Internet and mobile network access caused by the authorities,” and calls on the international community to quickly exert pressure for Tehran to “stop killing and injuring more protesters in the ‘ out of sight'”. ‘.
