At least four seriously injured in knife attack at gym in West Germany

Several people were injured on Tuesday after a knife attack at a gym in the western German city of Duisburg, police sources said.

The incident took place in the historic center of Duisburg and German authorities urged residents to avoid that area.

Police later revealed that a sharp object had been used in the attack and at least four people were seriously injured.

Authorities have indicated that the four injured are German citizens, three of whom are in mortal danger.

Police reported that they received the first emergency calls around 5:40 p.m. (4:40 p.m. in Lisbon).

That reports the same newspaper according to eyewitnesses, the locals were indiscriminately attacked by the aggressor, who fled.

Duisburg has about 500,000 inhabitants and is located at the confluence of the Rhine and Ruhr.

This city used to be famous for its coal mining and steel production, but in recent decades has been plagued by high unemployment and poverty.

The chairman of the German parliament, Bärbel Bas, who is from Duisburg, was shocked by the attack.

“Terrible. My thoughts are with the injured. I hope that the emergency services can quickly clarify the threatening situation.” emphasized Bas via the social network Twitter.

Last month, a gunman broke into his former hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in the northern German city of Hamburg, killing six people before committing suicide after police arrived.
