India’s population will surpass China’s by 2.9 million later this year, becoming the most populous country in the world at 1.428 million, according to a report released by the UN on Wednesday.
Demographic indicators from the United Nations Population Fund’s “State of the World Population Report 2023” show that India will have an estimated population of 1,428.6 million, compared to China’s 1,425.7 million.
The World Population Review center, which estimates real-time population growth projections, indicated on Wednesday that India has crossed the 1.426 million mark, about 400,000 more than China.
The organization initially predicted that this would happen in mid-April, despite the fact that there has been no census in India since 2011, making the forecasts difficult to correct.
Population censuses in India, which are conducted every 10 years, were postponed in 2021 due to the covid-19 pandemic, with a new date scheduled for 2024.
In 2021, China’s population will grow by 480,000 people, the lowest number since 1962, putting the country on the brink of negative growth.
The Asian giant’s fertility rate fell below its replacement level of 2.1 in 1992 and has stabilized at 1.3 in 2020.
China’s National Health Commission confirmed last summer that the population of the country, the most populous country in the world, with about 1.4 billion people, will experience negative growth before 2025.
According to UN estimates, India will continue to experience positive population growth in the coming decades, peaking at 1.7 billion in 2064.
