A federal judge postponed Jack Teixeira’s hearing on Wednesday, in which the accused in one of the largest Pentagon leaks of the past decade would hear whether he would remain in detention until the start of the trial.
US Judge David Hennessy ordered a postponement of about two weeks for the hearing to give Teixeira’s lawyers more time to respond to the government’s request to detain the youngster.
Teixeira, 21, was scheduled to hold his second hearing in Boston federal court today since he was arrested last Thursday on charges of unauthorized removal and preservation of classified and national defense information. He must appear in court again on Wednesday for a hearing.
Jack Teixeira, a member of the Massachusetts Air National Guard, remains in detention awaiting his next trial in about two weeks, although no date has yet been set.
The US Attorney’s Office said a “preliminary hearing” would take place today.
Jack Teixeira is the prime suspect in the leak of classified military documents, who has been formally charged with “unauthorized retention and transmission of national defense information” and “unauthorized removal and retention of classified documents or materials.”
The documents published “online” reveal US intelligence concerns about the feasibility of a Ukrainian counter-offensive against Russian forces, who invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022 over issues of lack of military training and logistics, as well as concerns of the US. on Kiev’s ability to repel attacks from Moscow.
Dozens of photos of these documents have been released on Twitter, Telegram or Discord platforms in recent days. Some of them circulated on the internet for weeks if not months before catching the attention of the press.
