The sinking of a ship carrying migrants off the Peloponnese in southern Greece has killed one man and rescued 47 people, the Greek Coast Guard said on Thursday.
A 45-year-old man died and “47 surviving migrants”, including 16 women, 16 children and 15 men, the force reported.
“Four children and three women, probably victims of the trip, were taken to the Sparta hospital,” authorities said.
The total number of people on the boat, which crashed into a rock, as well as their nationality, has not yet been confirmed due to “confusing testimonies” from survivors.
Searches continue off the Lakonia coast as authorities search for possible survivors.
Greece has been the destination for many people fleeing wars and poverty in Asia, Africa and the Middle East.
