The best photos of the year. Meet the World Press Photo winners

“Mariupol Maternity Hospital Airstrike,” the image of an injured pregnant woman being transported from a maternity hospital that was attacked in Mariupol, Ukraine, is World Press Photo Photo of the Year.

The photo, taken by Evgeniy Maloletka, for Associated Press, was taken on March 9, 2022, and the woman in the photo, Iryna Kalinina, died shortly after with her stillborn baby.

In the “Story of the Year” category, World Press Photo named “The Price of Peace in Afghanistan” by Mads Nissen (Denmark) as the winner. The image tells the story of young Afghan Khalil Ahmad, who had to sell his kidney to help his parents buy food for the family. After the operation, Khalil suffers from chronic pain and no longer has the strength to play football and cricket.

The winner of the “Long Term Project” award is the project titled “Battered Waters”, by Anush Babajanyan (Armenia). The series of photos taken for the National Geographic Society reflect Central Asia’s lack of access to water. The images show part of the Amu Darya River in Uzbekistan and the dark red water caused by the drop in the river’s water level.

“Here, The Doors Don’t Know Me” by Mohamed Mahdy (Egypt) is the winning photo in the “Open Format” category. Using found footage and the artist’s own photography, this project presents “a communal way of life lamentation about disappearance”.
