The Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, called this Saturday, Earth Day, for greater “climate action” and “massive investment” for the most vulnerable countries and communities.
“Healthy ecosystems, from oceans and rivers to forests and grasslands, are also critical in our fight against climate change. We will work to implement the UN’s landmark biodiversity deal to ensure that 30% of the Earth’s land and water Earth is protected by 2030,” Guterres said. he said in a statement.
The official also called for “massive investments” for the most vulnerable countries and communities.
The UN Secretary General believes that, although governments must lead these changes, both companies, institutions and civil society must play an important role.
“Our actions are devastating forests, jungles, farmlands, wetlands, oceans, coral reefs, rivers, seas and lakes. Biodiversity is collapsing while a million species are on the brink of extinction. We must end these wars relentless and senseless against nature. We have the tools, the knowledge and the solutions, but we must speed up the pace,” he said.
The UN Secretary General also gave as an example the wisdom of indigenous communities and the “millennial care” they have for the environment.
He concluded the statement with a call for all people to “speak up” and demand that leaders protect the planet for present and future generations.
