An earthquake of magnitude 6.1 shook the waters of the Banda Sea, in the southern region of Indonesia, today, without the authorities having reported damage or activated the tsunami warning so far.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS), which records global seismic activity, located the hypocenter at a depth of 44 kilometers in the waters between the Moluccas archipelago and the island of Celebes.
The closest city to the quake is Katobu, in the southeast of the island of Celebes, located 320 kilometers west of the epicenter, and with a population of around 42,000 people.
Indonesia is located on the so-called “Pacific Ring of Fire”, an area of great seismic and volcanic activity, where around 7,000 earthquakes are recorded each year, most of them moderate.
