Germany announces a 5.5% salary increase for civil servants

German civil servants will increase by 5.5%, that is, a minimum monthly increase of 340 euros, with the aim of helping to offset the effects of inflation. This is the result of the negotiations that ended on Saturday night, after several strikes in sectors such as the postal service, transportation, and health.

Even so, the understanding is far from what the unions demanded, that is, an increase of 10.5%, or 500 euros per month for all workers.

The salary update now agreed with the German government will only come into force in March 2024 and will benefit 2.5 million civil servants. However, starting in June, those who work for the German state will receive compensation of three thousand euros to help overcome the impacts of inflation. This amount will be paid in installments and is tax free.

The German government considers that this is a “good and fair wage agreement”. On the other hand, the unions say they have gone to the limit of tolerance.

In Germany, inflation was 7.4% in March, but was already at 8.8% in October last year.
