Pope Francis called for “dialogue” this Sunday in the face of the “serious” situation in Sudan, where deadly clashes between the army and paramilitaries have been going on for more than a week.
“Unfortunately, the situation continues to be serious in Sudão, so I renew or appeal for the violence to end as quickly as possible and for the path of dialogue to be resumed,” said Francisco, during the traditional Sunday public prayer, at Praça de Saint Peter.
“I invite everyone to pray for our Sudanese brothers and sisters,” he reinforced.
Since April 15, the two generals in power since the 2021 coup have launched a merciless war.
The violence, mainly in Khartoum and Darfur (west), has already caused more than 420 deaths and 3,700 injuries, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
Tens of thousands of people have been displaced to other Sudanese states or across the borders into Chad and Egypt. And they provoked the mobilization of several countries to evacuate their citizens.
