British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced on Sunday the withdrawal of UK diplomatic staff and their family members from Sudan.
“The British Armed Forces carried out a complex and swift operation to withdraw British diplomats and their families from Sudan, against a backdrop of escalating violence and threats to embassy staff,” Rishi Sunak wrote on Twitter.
“We continue to seek solutions to end the bloodbath in Sudan and ensure the safety of the British citizens left behind,” he added.
British Defense Minister Ben Wallace explained that the United Kingdom carried out this operation “together with the United States, France and other allies”, in which “more than 1,200 people” from the British armed forces participated.
This London operation was revealed after France and other countries announced today the withdrawal of their citizens.
US President Joe Biden also claimed that the military carried out “an operation to remove Khartoum administration personnel” from the US.
Sudan has entered the second week of heavy fighting. The conflict is between the forces of General Abdel Fattah al-Burhane, the country’s de facto leader since the 2021 coup, and his former deputy turned rival, General Mohamed Hamdane Daglo, who commands the Rapid Support Forces.
The provisional balance of the clashes indicates that there are more than 420 dead and 3,700 injured, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
