“We cannot allow Sudan to implode.” Borrell warns of consequences “across Africa”

In Luxembourg this Monday, the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, warned of the consequences “across Africa” if a “political solution” to end Sudan’s civil war is not reached.

“Sudan is a country with a large population”, the EU High Representative for Foreign Policy reminded, warning that this is one of the reasons why the international community “cannot allow [o país] impluda”. Because “shock waves would be sent to all of Africa”.

“The international community as a whole must exert all pressure on both sides to stop this war,” he defended, pointing out that he himself “talked with neighboring countries, [com] all friends partners, [e] even with the two generals in command of the troops”.

“The message from the international community is the same: it is necessary to stop the war, silence the weapons and start talking and look for a political solution, because there is no military solution to this war,” he said. Joseph Borrell.

In Sudan, the armed forces led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, who has commanded the country since the 2021 coup, have clashed with the militarized group led by General Mohamed Hamdane Dagalo. The latter also staged the military coup two years ago, but distanced himself from al-Burhan and became his enemy.

Diplomatic representatives of the European Union and several countries have unsuccessfully tried to mediate the conflict, but the situation is getting worse and is also endangering the presence of civilian diplomats.

Several European countries have already sent air assets to repatriate citizens of the European Union, taking into account the instability.

“Our personnel must be withdrawn because they are in the middle of a war,” the head of European diplomacy justified this Monday morning, admitting that “some of them had been injured”, which is why it became “impossible to continue working as diplomats, so the best thing you can do (…) is get them out”.

Asked why the head of the European Union diplomatic mission will remain on site, Borrell stated that at this stage the withdrawal is not yet foreseen and “he had to stay there, [pois] the captain is the last to leave the ship”.

Josep Borrell said the diplomat is out of danger and “is no longer in Khartoum”, despite still being in Sudan, but no longer in Khartoum”.
