Berlin Airport cancels flights due to ground staff strike

Berlin-Brandenburg Airport has canceled all departures for this Monday due to the strike of the security and passenger control team called by the trade union Ver.di, the international press reported.

According to the EFE news agency, periodic stops by workers began at 3 a.m. local time (2 a.m. in Lisbon) and lasted until the next morning.

The strike is being carried out by employees of the passenger control and aviation security zones and is part of the Ver.di trade union’s campaign to demand better wages and wage supplements for night shifts and holidays in addition to overtime.

In addition to the strike day in Berlin, calls have also been made for a partial strike at Hamburg airport for this Monday, affecting a third of scheduled flights.

The campaign of strikes among ground staff at German airports continues despite the agreement reached last Saturday between Ver.di and employers for the group of 2.5 million German public sector employees.

This agreement consisted of a series of special, tax-free benefits until February 2024 to compensate for inflation and a salary increase of 5.5% from March, which in some cases could be less than EUR 200 per month.
