Russian oligarch Yevgeny Prigozhin, leader of the Wagner group that hires mercenaries, said on Monday that mercenaries will stop taking prisoners in Ukraine and threaten to “destroy everything on the battlefield”.
Prigozhin’s latest statements come after the release of a recording in which alleged Ukrainian soldiers discuss the execution of a prisoner of war hired by the Wagner group.
The oligarch, referring to the recording, accuses Kiev of “failing to respect international law”.
Yevgeny Prigozhin said via digital messaging system Telegram, quoted by Spain’s Europa Press agency, that prisoners of war “are also entitled to minimum conditions”, threatening not to take prisoners.
“We’re going to kill everyone,” he says in the same voicemail.
The Wagner group operates on Ukrainian territory on behalf of the Russian Federation and is present in areas such as Bakhmut.
Most of the personnel of Yevgeny Prigozhin’s mercenary company are prisoners who were hired while serving their sentences in the Russian prison system.
