Council of the European Union approves mission to increase security in Moldova

The Council of the European Union on Monday approved a European Union partnership mission to Moldova under the common security and defense policy.

The mission aims to increase the resilience of the country’s security sector in crisis management and hybrid threats, including cybersecurity and countering information manipulation and foreign interference.

“As one of the countries most affected by the consequences of Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine, we are witnessing increasing and sustained Russian attempts to destabilize Moldova with hybrid actions”said Josep Borrell, head of European diplomacy.

“Today we are stepping up European Union support to Moldova to protect its security, territorial integrity and sovereignty”he added.

The mission has an initial mandate of two years and will be based in Moldova.

The civilian operation commander will be Stefano Tomat, Executive Director of Civil Planning and Conduct Capability (CPCC) in the European Union.

On 24 June 2022, the European bloc granted Moldova candidate status.

At the end of last year, the Council stated that the European Union would continue to support Moldova after the consequences of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The Russian military offensive on Ukrainian territory, launched on February 24 last year, plunged Europe into what is considered the most serious security crisis since World War II (1939-1945).
