Delegate proposes that “Bella Ciao” become Italy’s national anthem on Liberation Day

A deputy from the center-left of the Democratic Party (PD), Stefano Vaccari, presented a bill this Tuesday to make the song Bella Ciao the official anthem of Liberation Day in Italy.

The date, celebrated today, April 25, celebrates the liberation from the fascist dictatorship of Benito Mussolini and the Nazi occupation of the country.

Stefano Vaccari said he hoped the bill would make the popular resistance song the Liberation Song from next year.

Bella Ciaoa folk song from the late 19th century, it was originally sung by mondina workers, in protest against the harsh working conditions in the rice fields of northern Italy.

It was modified and adopted as the anthem of the Italian resistance movement by the partisans who opposed Nazism and Fascism, and who fought against the occupying forces of Nazi Germany, allies of the fascist and collaborationist Italian Social Republic (RSI) between 1943 and 1945. during the civil war in Italy.

The versions of Bella Ciao are still sung all over the world as an anthem of freedom and resistance.
