Russia says Kiev has lost “more than 15,000 troops” in the past month

Russian Defense Minister Serguei Shoigu said on Tuesday that the Ukrainian army has “lost more than 15,000 troops” in the past month of fighting, “despite unprecedented military aid” from Kiev’s allies.

“Despite unprecedented military aid from Western countries, the enemy is suffering significant casualties. In the last month of fighting alone, it has lost more than 15,000 men,” Shoigu told Russia’s official Interfax news agency.

During this period, Russian forces destroyed eight aircraft, 277 drones (unmanned flying devices), 430 tanks and other armored vehicles, as well as 225 pieces of artillery and mortars, he said.

“We will continue to eliminate Western-supplied weapons,” said Shoigu, who on Feb. 24, 2022, did not provide data on the total number of deaths among the Ukrainian army since the conflict began.

Hours earlier, the General Staff of the Ukrainian Army indicated in a post on its Facebook account that 191,500 Russian soldiers had been “liquidated” since the start of the invasion, triggered by an order from Russian President Vladimir Putin.

More specifically, the Ukrainian army indicated that to date 3,701 tanks, 2,930 artillery systems, 298 air defense systems, 308 aircraft, 294 helicopters, 2,477 ‘drones’, 947 cruise missiles, 18 ships, 5,851 vehicles and fuel tanks have been destroyed. and 360 pieces of “special equipment”.

Russia has not released data on casualties in the conflict since September 2022, when Shoigu confirmed the deaths of 5,937 servicemen.

Russian news portal Mediazona puts the total number of deaths at 19,688 – including 1,665 in the past 15 days – data it says is “confirmed” by publicly available information, a work carried out in conjunction with Britain’s BBC television network.
