The French authorities indicated this Tuesday that at least 540 people were arrested after the Labor Day protests in the main cities of France, registering injuries to 400 policemen and gendarmes.
According to the Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, the “points of violence” occurred during the demonstrations on Monday against the pension reform imposed by the head of state, Emmanuel Macron, and which were called in the context of the marches on 1 of May.
“We must firmly punish those who attacked the police,” said Darmanin, who called for the approval of a “law against rioters.”
The minister added that some of the injured were in a “very delicate” situation but out of danger.
Authorities said that in Paris, 259 people were injured in the clashes, 61 of whom were protesters.
“Where is the condemnation of Jean Luc Mélenchon against the attacks on the police,” said the minister, referring to the leader of the France Insoumise party and criticizing him for not condemning the violence.
“Silence makes him an accomplice,” Darmanin told Le Figaro newspaper.
