A 69-year-old American climber died Monday at Camp 2, at about 6,400 meters, on Everest, in Nepal, the expedition organizer announced Tuesday.
“He was not feeling well and died at Camp 2. Everything possible is being done to bring the body down,” said Pasang Tshering, a Sherpa with the Beyul Adventure organization, adding that the operation was hampered by weather conditions.
The spring season, which runs from mid-April to the end of May, began tragically this year on Everest with the disappearance of three Nepali climbers in April.
The trio were crossing the dangerous Khumbu Icefall to deliver supplies to Camp 1, the first leg of the route to the top of Everest, when they were hit by an avalanche and swept to the bottom of a crevasse.
