Ukraine’s parliament on Tuesday approved the extension of the country’s martial law and the mobilization of the male population for another three months to respond to the Russian military invasion, several deputies announced on social networks.
According to proposals approved by a large majority, the state of war is extended from May 20 to August 18.
The decision comes a day after Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelensky sent the two bills to parliament.
Ukraine’s martial law gives the authorities special powers to, for example, impose nighttime curfews, which have been in effect across the country since the start of the war on February 24, 2022.
By declaring mobilization, Ukraine prohibits all men of military age with fewer than three children from leaving the country and reserves the right to recall them if authorities deem it necessary.
The war caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine plunged Europe into what is considered the worst security crisis since World War II (1939-1945).
