“It’s inconceivable.” Almost 258 million people needed urgent food aid in 2022

About 258 million people in 58 countries or territories need urgent food aid in 2022 due to conflict, economic crises and climate disasters. According to a UN report released this Wednesday, this figure compares with the 193 million registered the previous year.

“It is inconceivable,” said the UN secretary general. This is a situation that, according to Guterres, shows “humanity’s failure to move towards eradicating hunger and achieving food security and better nutrition for all.”

The greatest difficulties are in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Afghanistan, Nigeria and Yemen, where more than 40 percent of people live in dire food need.

“Conflict and mass displacement continue to drive world hunger,” Guterres added, stressing that rising poverty, deepening inequalities, the climate crisis and natural disasters also contribute to food insecurity.
