Spanish Maritime Rescue rescued 47 migrants from a boat near Lanzarote, bringing the number of arrivals to the Canary Islands in the last hours to 92, according to data provided this Thursday to the EFE agency by that public body.
The ship Guardamar Plimnia rescued 43 men, three women and one minor, of sub-Saharan and North African origin, 52 kilometers east of the island of Lanzarote, when it was returning to the port of Arrecife.
During the early hours of the morning, Salvamento Marítimo Español rescued 45 people who were sailing in a boat 41 kilometers southeast of the capital of Fuerteventura, in Puerto del Rosario.
The group consisted of 39 men and six women, all of sub-Saharan origin, who set out from El Aaiun in Western Sahara.
The rescue was carried out by the Salvamar Izar boat, which was assisted by the Epson Trader boat to find the migrants’ boat.
The number of migrants attempting the crossing began to increase considerably from the end of 2019, when the increased presence of patrols in the Mediterranean reduced crossings through this seaway.
