Newborn is left in the “box of life” for the first time

After four years since the creation of the “box of life” in Bergamo, Italy, a newborn baby was left at the site this Wednesday, along with a message that emotionally moved the Red Cross team.

“Born this morning, 5/3/2023, at home. Just her and me, like these nine months”. It was around 5 p.m. that the alarm for the “life box” went off at the headquarters of the Red Cross Committee in Bergamo – a place designed to anonymously welcome newborns.

Hours after giving birth, the mother put the baby in the box – which has a door that gives access to the interior. Shortly thereafter, Red Cross staff took the newborn into their home and named her Naomi.

“I wish you all the best and all the happiness in the world. A kiss from mom forever. I entrust you with an important part of my life that I will certainly never forget,” read the note that moved the employees.

The abandoned baby wore overalls and a pink sweater, was assisted by a medical team, weighs 2.9 kilograms and is doing well.

The mother, whose age remains anonymous according to protocol, remained on site to ensure the baby was delivered safely. The fate of Naomi will be decided by the juvenile court of Brescia.

It is the first time a baby is placed in that “box of life”, four years after it was created. The cot is equipped with heating and a first aid kit that is immediately replenished: a sheet, a blanket and a resuscitation box in case of emergency.

When the door is opened, the alarm and camera are activated, but the mother is absolutely anonymous.
