Four members of the far-right group Proud Boys, including leader Enrique Tarrio, were found guilty Thursday of conspiring to commit sedition, for the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol.
In addition to Tarrio, the other Proud Boys members found guilty are Ethan Nordean, Joseph Biggs, and Zachary Rehl.
For this charge alone, each defendant is subject to up to 20 years in prison.
These group leaders were also found guilty of conspiring to obstruct the certification of the results of the November 2020 presidential election, in which Democrat Joe Biden defeated then-incumbent Donald Trump.
They were also found guilty of a third count, that of conspiring to interfere with the functions of members of Congress that day.
The verdicts were reached after seven days of deliberations in federal court in Washington. This trial was the last of three major sedition cases that federal prosecutors brought against key figures in the attack on the Capitol.
On January 6, 2021, some 10,000 people marched on the Capitol, 800 of whom stormed the premises of Congress as it met to ratify Biden’s electoral victory. At that time, five people were killed and around 140 policemen were attacked.
