An episode of the children’s series “Bluey” has sparked controversy over allegations of big shame (fatphobia), in an episode promoting exercise.
The original episode titled “Exercise” shows Bluey’s father, Bandit, in the bathroom brushing his teeth and weighing himself while Bluey is in the shower. Bandit complains about his weight: “Oh man… I just need to get some exercise,” he said, grabbing his stomach.
The next moment, Bluey’s mother, Chilli, appears with the same thought: “Who are you telling,” she says, entering with Bluey’s sister, Bingo.
Body image specialists reacted badly to the scene in this episode, arguing that it could transfer stigmas of weight and fat phobia to children.
This particular scene is from the ABC and BBC episode, which now opens with Bandit trying to practice while Bluey and Bingo turn it into a backyard game.
According to ABC, which runs the series, “Bluey’s recent episode, ‘Exercise,’ has been republished by ABC following a decision by the show’s creators.”
“The new version gives families the ability to handle important conversations in their own way,” he continues.
ABC supports the decision to re-edit the show and has updated the episode on its platforms. BBC Studios will use this revised version for worldwide distribution and will also support this decision.
Psychologists and body image experts welcomed the ABC’s decision, arguing that “cartoon dogs” need not side with diet culture.
The series is broadcast in Portugal on Disney Junior.
