The European Commission on Friday approved state aid of some €137 million in the form of direct subsidies to Portuguese farmers in the context of Russia’s war against Ukraine.
The approved measure targets agricultural producers active in sectors such as horticultural crops, vineyards, livestock and poultry.
The purpose of this state aid scheme, according to a statement from Brussels, is to reimburse eligible beneficiaries for part of the additional production costs incurred as a result of rising prices for energy and other factors of production and to help them overcome their difficulties. to the current crisis.
The Executive Board ruled that the state aid in question is in accordance with the conditions of the Temporary Framework for Crisis and Transition, does not exceed EUR 250,000 per beneficiary and must be granted no later than 31 December.
The military offensive launched by Russia in Ukraine on February 24, 2022 has so far led to the flight of more than 14.6 million people – 6.5 million internally displaced persons and more than 8.1 million to European countries – according to the latest data from the UN, which classifies this refugee crisis as the worst in Europe since World War II (1939-1945).
