President of Colombia pays working visit to Portugal

The President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, is in Portugal on Saturday and Sunday for a working visit, at the invitation of the Portuguese head of state Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.

According to a note published today on the official website of the Presidency of the Portuguese Republic on the Internet, “President Gustavo Petro’s trip to Portugal is part of a common perspective to deepen the excellent relations between the two countries”.

“On Sunday, May 7, a meeting between the two heads of state will take place at the National Palace of Belém, where matters on the bilateral agenda between Colombia and Portugal will be discussed and elaborated, as well as matters related to international current affairs.”, it says in the same note.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa will attend the coronation ceremony of the monarch of the United Kingdom, Carlos III, in London today and then return to Lisbon.

According to the note from the Presidency of the Republic, the Portuguese head of state will host tonight “a dinner in honor of President Gustavo Petro at the Cidadela Palace in Cascais”.

Gustavo Petro, economist, former guerrilla and former senator, who stood out in Colombia’s leftist opposition, was elected president in June last year and took office in August.

In March this year, the heads of state of Portugal and Colombia attended the 28th Ibero-American Summit in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, which was also attended by the Portuguese Prime Minister, António Costa.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said one of the bilateral meetings he had on the sidelines of the summit was with Colombia’s president and at the time raised the possibility of Gustavo Petro visiting Portugal, “not necessarily with state policy”.
