At least 20 people, most of them minors, died this Sunday after the boat they were traveling on capsized in Malappuram district, in India’s Kerala province, authorities said.
“There may be more casualties under the hull. We need to get them out. The boat capsized, but we still don’t know why. The police are investigating,” said Kerala’s sports minister, who is responsible for coordinating rescue operations.
There were about 30 people on the boat.
The ruler explained that the children were on an excursion and enjoying the school holidays.
The incident took place on Sunday afternoon and the survivors were transported to the nearest public and private hospitals.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has already expressed his condolences and announced compensation for the families of the dead.
The country’s president, Draupadi Murmu, also referred to the “tragic” incident on social media.
“It’s extremely surprising and sad,” he said.
